Buy and Hold: How to Perpetuate Your Investment Losses
Posted on February 7, 2012 | 1 CommentI have received countless e-mails and phone calls from individuals who have been led astray by brokers, financial planners and others using buy-and-hold and dollar cost averaging. Stories abound of retirees having to go back to work just because someone told them that "the market can't go any lower" or "let's dollar cost average." -
Financial Ecology
Posted on September 24, 2011 | No CommentsAs with animal and plant ecology the weak should be allowed to disappear. As a financial student I see new instruments and corporation types being created and others dying out because they were not able to feed in the current market ecology. -
Investor Psychology
Posted on May 7, 2011 | No CommentsIn the initial stages of a bull market, it's the fear of the unknown that keep the masses out of an asset class. They think to themselves, "Yes. I can see it's cheap. I can see the fundamentals stack up. But what if, blah blah blah. Why is no one buying it? There must be something wrong with it. Best to steer clear." -
Are You Smart Money?
Posted on April 29, 2011 | No CommentsWith that description of smart money, the next logical question to ask is, what are they looking at now? To answer that question, understand the time horizon they have in mind. They’re not looking at next week or next month like a trader would, nor so far out that it will take the rest of their life to realize a profit. The smart money is looking at the likely trends over the next few years. -
The Best Thing I Ever Learned About Investing
Posted on April 19, 2011 | No CommentsAbout 99% of people who buy stock think about how much it is going to go up. Very few ask their broker where to sell if it goes down. Furthermore when it does go up how do you take you profit? How do you protect that hummer if it has been bought at $10 and starts up steadily going to 40 or higher? Has your broker ever mentioned a trailing stop loss? Probably not. The same technique applies to mutual funds. -
Types of Investing Risks
Posted on April 17, 2011 | No CommentsMarket Risk: Corrections and bear markets inflict harm on countless individuals who throw in the towel and lock in their losses. In a classic correction, the broad market averages lose 10% [...] -
How to beat the mutual fund companies at their own game
Posted on March 1, 2011 | No CommentsThese companies advocate a stubborn Buy & Hold philosophy despite the devastating effects that approach had on investors' portfolios during the recent bear market. Performance is immaterial to them-they want your money in their fund whether it's going up or down. -
Filene Plan For Stocks
Posted on February 27, 2011 | No CommentsHow about looking in your stock portfolio? Are there some stocks or funds that have been in there gathering dust, giving no return and tying up money that could be earning an investment return elsewhere? Isn’t it time to take your own “mark down” to clean out space for new stocks that will make you some money? -
Belly Buttons
Posted on February 27, 2011 | No CommentsThere are people who are paid big bucks for opinions. Stock analysts are hired by big brokerage companies to research individual companies and both the local and world economies. They spend hours, days and weeks investigating a company balance sheet. A few will actually go to the company headquarters to see the physical plant and interview with management. Ultimately they will form an opinion on whether the stock should or should not be bought or sold. -
Back to Basic – Sejarah Industri Unit Amanah di Malaysia
Posted on February 26, 2011 | No CommentsMengikut sejarah, skim unit amanah (SUA) yang pertama di dunia, The Foreign and Colonial Government Trust, diasaskan di London pada tahun 1868 namun SUA pada waktu itu tidak sepopular SUA pada masa kini. Di Amerika Syarikat, satu skim pelaburan berkelompok (collective investment scheme) yang menyerupai SUA menjadi popular sekitar tahun 1950an – iaitu satu syarikat pelaburan “open-end” dikenali sebagai “mutual fund“. Hanya pada tahun 60-an dan 70-an, SUA menjadi sebutan ramai termasuk di negara-negara seperti United Kingdom dan Australia.
